Libri Mastri

I know it's a bit late, but... happy new year!

Today I am going to show you the largest item in the Vatican Vault. It is a libri mastri containing information about the Borghese family’s finances, wealth, and administration. It was donated by the Borghese family to the Holy See along with many other family records in 1932. Back then, the fledgling Italian state could not preserve documents as well as the long-established Vatican could. The libri mastri weighs 132 pounds (60 kilograms) — so much that two men have to carry it out of the Vatican vault to the study rooms.
